History of the Bancroft Skating Club

In June of 1970, a group of mothers who were interested in forming a figure skating club held a meeting and created a board. Mrs.Edna Bowers was hired as the professional coach. That fall there were 136 registered skaters.

In 1973 The club presented it's first carnival with the theme of "Can-a-da". This event was greeted with such enthusiasm by the public that it became an annual event.

1973 was the year the Bancroft Skating Club joined the Canadian Figure Skating Association. This association allows the skaters to be tested by officials judges making them eligible to compete with chance of going on to bigger and better things. In the 1975-76 season power skating was introduced to the young boys and girls. In 1977, the club donated $1200.00 toward the purchase of a sound booth and equipment.

In 1990 Miss Cairne Buchanan became the first skater from our club to achieve both her gold freeskate and gold dance. Since then only five other skaters have achieved this goal: Renee Richard, Rachel Richard, Sophia Kolios, Kimberly Stelter & Annalee Robbins.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS goes out to all the skaters that competed in Huntsville. It was a big first weekend back for some and some their first time! A lot of fun, memories and great accomplishments were made!
